Medical Conditions Caused by Acid Reflux

The stomach has glands that create hydrochloric acid that are made to help the digestive process when food is consumed. If the stomach generates an abundance of acid, an acid imbalance will happen. Several medical conditions are caused by an acid disproportion in the stomach that can result in uncomfortable and painful situation for the patient.

Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) - is a medical condition also known as acid reflux disease categorized by continual reflux of acids from the stomach to the esophagus. The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases states gastroesophageal reflux must happen at least twice a week before it is deemed GERD.

Doctor's usually first recommend lifestyle and dietary changes when first attempting to treat GERD. The condition can also be cared for with drugs that counteract acids or reduce the production of stomach acid. However, if the symptoms continue, surgery may be required to reinforce the lower esophageal sphincter.

Heartburn - is a burning sensation felt in the chest close to the heart that can be associated with an acidic or tart taste in the mouth. It usually happens directly after a meal consisting of foods known to generate excess stomach acid that can not be absorbed by those food items.

Heartburn can be prevented with lifestyle changes such as losing weight, changing to an "Acid Reflux Diet", avoiding tight clothes, avoiding trigger foods and quitting smoking. Antacids can also be used to neutralize the acid and prevent irritation of the esophagus.

Indigestion - is also known as functional dyspepsia. It is a situation that can entail pain or burning in the abdomen, a sense of being full during eating and/or a painful feeling of fullness after eating. Indigestion can also be treated with lifestyle modifications such as; not having coffee and alcohol, stay away from carbonated sodas, maintaining a good sleep pattern, eliminating stress and maintaining an "Acid Reflux Diet".

Gastric Ulcersstart when stomach acid wears away the inside layer of the stomach. This will happen when there is too much acid generated by the gastric glands that are located in the stomach's coating. An individual with a gastric ulcer will encounter loss of appetite, heartburn, weight loss, indigestion, nausea, and gastrointestinal bleeding.
