Radiofrequency Acid Reflux Surgery

Radiofrequency acid reflux surgery is a treatment that is usually performed on an outpatient basis. Its primary purpose is to relieve the pain and suffering caused by acid reflux disease, heartburn and GERD.

A doctor will utilize an endoscope, which will create heat by sending the energy generated by a radiofrequency to develop lesions in upper stomach and lower esophageal sphincter (LES).

The goal of the procedure is to increase the thickness of the muscle walls in these areas. If performed successfully the LES pressure will increase and acid reflux will decrease because of the LES is now operating as it should.

The procedure generates pulsating water molecules and heat in the selected tissue. This causes the tissue to contract and increases the muscle depth. The scar tissue which is a result of this procedure fortifies the muscle and the heat destroys the nerves that caused the stomach acid to be able to refluxed back to the esophagus.

Radiofrequency acid reflux surgery works best for patients who are presently taking medications to control there symptoms and these drugs are functioning as they should. However, these patients do not want to continue to take the drugs due to the cost or side affects they are experiencing.

Even for the people that radiofrequency acid reflux surgery is successful with, many of them will still need to return to there medications sometime in the future.

The treatment does not take long, only approximately one hour and the recovery time is very short. Most of the individuals that have this done can return to there normal schedules within a day or two.

The clinical studies conducted on this procedure have determined many of the individuals it was carried out on where happy with the results and were able to stop taking there medications, but not all of them.

The procedure is not without risk however. There are possible severe problems, such as; cases of perforation, hemorrhage, and even death.
